Ask five agencies what an MVP costs and you'll get five numbers between $8,000 and $180,000. That's not a pricing problem. That's a scoping problem.

Here's the honest breakdown — what you're actually paying for in 2026, and how to know when a quote is serious.

The real cost drivers

Most founders think cost scales with features. It doesn't. It scales with four things:

1. Scope clarity

A tight, written scope cuts build time by 30–50%. Vague briefs are what turn $15k projects into $60k projects — not complexity, ambiguity.

2. Integrations

A login screen is cheap. A login screen that talks to Stripe, HubSpot, Twilio, and your custom analytics stack is not. Every third-party you add compounds the testing surface area.

3. AI complexity

"Add AI" ranges from a $500 OpenAI API call to a $40k custom RAG pipeline. Know which you actually need before you ask for quotes. (Most founders need the cheap version and don't know it.)

4. Who's writing the code

A senior dev writes fewer lines, ships faster, and introduces less tech debt than a junior team billing twice the hours. You pay for judgement, not keystrokes.

What a 2026 MVP actually costs

  • Landing page + waitlist — $1k–$3k
  • Validation prototype (clickable, no backend) — $3k–$8k
  • Lean MVP (auth, one core workflow, deploy) — $10k–$25k
  • Production MVP (multi-user, payments, dashboard, AI layer) — $25k–$60k
  • "MVP" that's actually a full product — $60k+ (and you should question whether it's still an MVP)

Anything under $10k for a real MVP in 2026 is either (a) a no-code build you could do yourself, or (b) a team that's underquoting to win the deal and will come back for change orders later.

How to tell if you're being overcharged

Three red flags:

  • The quote has no timeline. If they can't tell you how long it'll take, they can't tell you what it'll cost.
  • There's no breakdown. A lump sum "$35k" is not a quote. It's a number. Ask for hours by role.
  • They're quoting before understanding the user. If nobody asked who this product is for, they're not scoping. They're guessing.
